Your liver detox is on DAY 5 of the detox week.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are taking medication, skip this day and replace it by the program of day 1. The use of grapefruit can have influence on efficacy of the medicine.

As I mentioned in the guidelines: Always consult your doctor if you have serious medical conditions before the start of the detox.

This is a special day in the program with a serious cleanse of the liver and gall bladder.

It is essential to keep up with your good work until the end of the detox for best results. This day has to be followed exactly as described for it to work properly.

Why do we need to take care for the liver?

Our Western food has way too much industrial food, sugars, bad fats, high fructose, chemicals and alcohol in it. This causes a polluted liver, rather sooner than later. A mostly unknown fact is that this way of eating creates gallstones, which can create many diseases.

Even when your habits are mainly healthy, this liver detox is exactly what your body needs to reset and stay strong and healthy.

The liver and gall bladder are the second stage of digestion. They create the building stones for healthy cells with the elements that are broken down by the digestive tract. In Ayurveda this is called Butha Agni, or the 5 fires of each element- Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Space.

The liver functions

  • detoxification of toxines and useless compounds (ama), so they can be evacuated through gall, intestines and kidneys.
  • production of antioxidants to protect our cells from damage
  • to transform nutrients, that have been broken down by the digestive tract into bio available compounds. Our cells use these compounds to maintain our body.
  • together with the pancreas it keeps the blood sugar levels balanced
  • making clotting factors, so our blood doesn’t become too thin or too viscose
  • transformation of hormones into useful and/or harmless compounds or bind them.
  • On top of that it has to produce gall fluids for the digestive tract.

And thus the circle is complete. When one function is overdemanded, the liver can’t do it’s work properly for the other functions.

Our environment is becoming more and more toxic, with a large amount of insecticides, xeno-oestrogens and xenobiotics in our food. Our liver has to work overtime to detoxify all that rubbish. This impacts the liver functions and other body functions.

All obstructions preventing the proper function of liver and gallbladder will have an effect on all types of body tissues. Luckily the gall stones are easy to remove in a premature stage, when they are still waxlike conglomerates of gall. They will not be detected by research machines, but are responsible for blocking the gall channel to the intestines. Often this can become very painful to the extent that the whole gall bladder has to be surgically removed. This would be unnecessary when a liver detox day is done regularly.

The effects of this detox can be: better sight, more energy, positive mindset, less pain in joints, better healing of wounds, less prone to infections, better flexibility, stronger body, nice complexion of skin, healing of acné.The liver functions

How to do the Liver Detox

You will need a few things for this day:

  1. Bitter salt or Magnesium sulphate , also called Epsomsalt, will be taken in with hot water, as it opens up the gall and intestinal passage ways. Thanks to this bitter salt you will experience no pain what so ever, when the gall stones are removed.
  2. Sour fruits make the gall more fluid and soak off all intestinal plaques. Sour apples, grapefruit and lemon will do the trick.
  3. Ghee or olive oil will increase the gall production, so the bad cholesterol (LDL) gets evacuated.

Procedure

  • You start the day with 1/2 liter of lukewarm water and 1 tbsp of epsom or bitter salt. This is not tasty, but it will keep your hunger away for some time.
  • Do your morning yoga routine.
  • Make the smoothie according to the recipe for this day.
  • Drink until you have enough, put the rest in fridge for later.
  • You might feel the urge to go to the toilet a few times. The stool can become watery or a bit sticky from the LDL-cholesterol and gall that’s leaving your body. If you don’t feel any urge after one hour, take another glass of the bitter salt with water.
  • Make more of the smoothie as you feel like it. Take only this during the day, or a sour apple if you can’t resist.
  • Drink plenty of warm drinks to keep warm from inside, with ginger and lemon.
  • If you feel too cold or hungry in the evening, you can eat some soup or light kitchari with quinoa. Best before 6pm.
  • Before bedtime: make one glass with 1/4 olive oil and 1/4 lemon juice, 1/4 organic apple juice , 1/4 grapefruit. Mix well and drink it. Lie down straight away.
  • You might feel urge during the night, that’s ok. If you feel nauseous, know that it will pass.
  • In the morning: you most probably will run to the toilet. You might see green waxy balls, which are gall stones in a premature stage.
  • If still no evacuation is taking place, take another glass of bitter salt. It can take a few hours until your bowels are cleared, so it is best to do this on a weekend day. If you started your detox on Monday, you’ll have this on Saturdaymorning.
